Green Venue

The Grand Hyatt is a participant in the program that is Greening Melbourne Hotels, “Savings in the City”. The program had the Hyatt among 15 Melbourne hotels achieve Waste Wise Certification in 2005.  This process resulted in a 15% reduction in waste going to landfill and a best practise standard in the hospitality industry of less than 9 litres of waste per guest per night. To achieve this, a recycling program is in place that incorporates paper, glass, cardboard and cooking oil.

To improve energy efficiency the Hyatt has converted all the back of house lighting to either fluorescent or dimmer switches. The same has been applied to 25% of meeting rooms and 30% of guest rooms so far.

When upgrading refrigeration and other appliances energy efficiency ratings will be factored in as a means to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Water savings include providing guests the option to not have linens and towels washed every day and to monitor consumption and address surges and leaks promptly. Further water conservation measures are under review.

ICLEI-A/NZ is proud to be working with a venue taking such measures to improve their environmental performance.
